Back in the day there probably weren't very many people interested in getting in the life insurance industry. It may have had a reputation of being boring and something older men did. But, for the past couple of decades, that changed. The life insurance industry is attracting all different types of people from all different ages.

Here's why. This career provides you with flexibility, the opportunity to build your own business, and do work that actually makes a difference in people's lives. I want you to know that you don't have to come from a financial background to get started. What matters is your willingness to learn, work with people, and help families make important financial decisions. Most of us who got started didn't have a background in finances, but we learned as we continued.

The truth is that becoming a life insurance agent isn't for everyone. That's why we have a Career Fit Questionnaire you can take before hand to help you figure out if you should move forward with this career. You can find the link at the bottom of this Career page.

How Do You Become a Life Insurance Agent?

The first step is getting your life insurance license. The requirements vary by state, but in California, you generally need to complete the required prelicensing education, pass the state exam, submit your application, and meet the background check requirements. We have a discount code for our agents.

Once you're licensed, you will get appointed with carriers to be able to sell. We have access to around 50 companies.

Is Life Insurance a Good Career?

One thing I love about this industry is that life insurance is about so much more than selling a policy. People plan for living, but often forget to plan for death. When a family loses a loved one, the last thing they should have to worry about is how they will pay the mortgage, cover everyday expenses, or keep their children financially secure.

If you haven't yet, take a look at my personal testimony here: Top Financial Agency Founder Testimony.

As a life insurance agent, you have an opportunity to help families prepare before the unexpected happens. The industry can also offer opportunities to grow your income, develop leadership skills, build a team, and create a business. However, income is not guaranteed. Many agents work on commission, and success takes consistent effort, product knowledge, relationship building, and follow up.

It's also a great business for parents. I'm able to homeschool my twins while running this business.

What Should You Know Before Getting Licensed?

Getting your license is just the beginning. You'll need to learn how different types of life insurance work, including term life, whole life, and indexed universal life insurance. You'll also need to understand underwriting, client needs, compliance, and how to explain policies clearly.

We are an agency that teaches you how to serve people, not just how to sell. We have a 5 Step Client Stewardship Roadmap that allows you to guide your clients. The roadmap is good not only as an easy way for you to help your clients along the path, but it's a good visual for your clients. You want to understand what you're offering and why it may or may not be appropriate for a particular family. Your reputation is built on the quality of your guidance and the trust you earn.

Is the Life Insurance Industry Right for You?

If you enjoy helping people, are willing to learn, and want to build something meaningful, this industry may be worth exploring. You don't need to know everything on day one. You need to be teachable, consistent, and committed to doing right by the families you serve.

At Top Financial Agency, I believe financial protection is about helping people prepare for life's uncertainties and creating a stronger financial future for the next generation.

If you're considering becoming a life insurance agent, start by taking the Fit Questionnaire Here to determine if it's a fit for you.
